How to choose the diameter of rotary drilling bit and the corresponding pile foundation size

Author:

1、 Factors influencing the selection of drill bit diameter for rotary drilling

1. Engineering requirements: The selection of the diameter of the rotary drilling bit should comply with the engineering design requirements and the bearing capacity requirements of the pile foundation. If the diameter of the drill bit is too small or too large, it will affect the bearing capacity and stability of the pile foundation.

2. Geological conditions: Different geological conditions have a significant impact on the selection of drill bit diameter for rotary drilling. In soft soil, muddy or sandy soil layers, a relatively smaller drill bit diameter should be selected, while in hard soil or rock layers, a relatively larger drill bit diameter should be chosen.

3. Drilling rig specifications: Drilling rig specifications are also an important reference factor for selecting the diameter of rotary drilling bits. For smaller drilling rigs, choosing a smaller drill bit diameter can better meet their performance. On large drilling rigs, large-diameter drill bits can be selected for construction.

2、 The pile foundation size corresponding to the diameter of the rotary drilling bit

1. Rotary drill bits with a diameter of less than 600mm: suitable for drilling holes with a diameter of less than 300mm, with a drilling depth generally not exceeding 30m, suitable for various soil layers, especially for soft soil, muddy soil, sandy soil and other formations.

2. Rotary drill bits with diameters ranging from 600mm to 1000mm: suitable for drilling holes with diameters below 400mm, with a drilling depth generally not exceeding 50m. They are suitable for loose sand, soft clay, and mild silt formations. For gravel, crushed stone, and rocky soil layers, the diameter of the drill head needs to be increased according to different conditions.

3. Rotary drilling bits with a diameter of over 1000mm: suitable for drilling holes with a diameter of over 500mm, with a drilling depth generally not exceeding 80m, suitable for geological conditions such as soft rocks, good gravel soil, calcareous soil, etc., and especially suitable for situations where there are many rock fragments and stones in the drilling hole.

3、 Case analysis

Our company participated in the pile foundation construction of a high-rise building. The problem is that the on-site anti-corrosion requirements are relatively high, and we hope to reduce the disturbance of pile foundation construction to the surrounding environment. However, the pile foundation also needs to have high bearing capacity and stability, so we need to choose a suitable diameter for the rotary drilling bit.

Based on the actual situation, we chose a rotary drilling rig with a diameter of 1200mm. After several days of construction, the drilling depth reached 38m, and the pile foundation quality was excellent and met the design requirements. This construction fully demonstrates the importance of selecting the appropriate diameter of the rotary drilling bit, which can not only achieve good construction results, but also reduce unnecessary resource waste and environmental pollution.
