Kelly Box Basics: Matching Your Tooling to Your Rig's Kelly Bar
Author:
The Kelly box is the only interface between your rig and every tool it will ever spin. Get it wrong and the best-engineered bucket in the world is a paperweight. Yet mismatched tooling is one of the most common ordering errors we see from GCC contractors — especially on mixed fleets.
The Four Standard Sizes
Kelly bars on rotary rigs commonly run four drive-tube (kelly box) standards:
- 130×130 mm — compact and mid-size rigs (typical Sany SR155 class, small XCMG units)
- 150×150 mm — the workhorse class (XCMG XR220–XR280D, many Soilmec SR models)
- 200×200 mm — heavy rigs (XR320D+, Soilmec SR80, Bauer BG large series)
- 250×250 mm — the heaviest class of large-diameter deep-piling rigs
Drive keys, pin orientation, and locking pin diameter also vary by manufacturer — two "150" boxes are not automatically interchangeable.
How to Order Right the First Time
Tell your supplier four things: rig brand and model, Kelly bar first-section drive size, required tool diameter, and formation. A serious manufacturer confirms the box drawing before fabrication — not after delivery.
Mixed Fleets: One Tool, Many Boxes
Contractors running Bauer, Soilmec, Sany and XCMG rigs side by side often order the same bucket in two Kelly boxes — or better, choose a manufacturer that stocks the four common sizes as standard and does ODM conversions quickly. XUANWA manufactures with all four standard Kelly boxes and provides ODM customisation (typically 15–25 days factory lead time), with the most popular box/diameter combinations stocked at the KIZAD Abu Dhabi warehouse.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
A wrong box means re-machining (2–3 weeks) or a second tool. On a schedule-driven GCC project, that is exactly the downtime local stock is supposed to prevent — so verify the box before you buy.
