High Groundwater Piling in Coastal GCC: Drilling Below the Water Table

Author:

Along the GCC coast — Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi island, the Saudi Gulf shore — standing groundwater is often just 1–3 m below surface. Almost every pile is bored below the water table, and the formation that has to stand up is loose, water-bearing marine sand. This is where piling projects are won or lost.

The Three Risks

  • Boiling / running sand: hydraulic gradient at the bore base blows sand upward as you drill — the classic "hole keeps filling" problem
  • Necking: soft silt layers squeeze the bore on lifting, reducing pile section
  • Sedimentation: high-solids slurry leaves a thick pile of debris at the base, failing cleaning checks before concreting

Three Proven Methods

1. Full casing (with oscillator). A casing driven and oscillated into the sand keeps the bore completely open — the most reliable answer in flowing sands and close to structures. Pair a casing oscillator (1,600 / 2,150 mm models) with single/double wall casing and drill inside with a soil bucket or core barrel.

2. Polymer support fluid. For long, open bores without casing, polymer slurry stabilises the sand and carries cuttings. Discipline matters: viscosity checks, desanding before concreting, and never topping up with salty seawater.

3. Combined method. Upper casing through the water-bearing sand, then polymer or dry drilling into the bearing stratum below — the standard approach for 25–40 m coastal piles.

Tooling Notes

Below water, spoil capture gets harder: fine wet sand flows. Tight-sealing double-bottom soil buckets, extra bucket cycles, and a final pass with a cleaning bucket are what turn a sedimented base into a passing one. And every minute of cycle time saved per pile compounds across a 500-pile waterfront project.

XUANWA supplies casing, oscillators, sand-rated buckets and cleaning buckets — all stocked at the KIZAD Abu Dhabi warehouse for same-day UAE delivery.
