Drilling Aeolian Dune Sands in the GCC: Why Standard Buckets Fail

Author:

Across the GCC, aeolian (wind-deposited) dune sands blanket large parts of Abu Dhabi's mainland, Dubai's southern desert, and much of central Saudi Arabia. On paper, sand is "easy drilling." On site, it is one of the most deceptive formations a piling contractor will face.

What Makes Dune Sand Difficult

Aeolian sands are uniformly graded, typically fine to medium (0.1–0.4 mm), with very low fines content and near-zero cohesion. That produces four site problems:

  • Running behaviour: uncased or unsupported bores collapse and run as the auger or bucket is withdrawn
  • Poor capture: loose sand falls out of a standard open bucket during lifting, so each cycle removes far less spoil than the bucket volume suggests
  • Borehole deviation: light, uniform sand gives the cutting edge little resistance, letting the tool drift off vertical
  • Sticking on lifting: suction forms between the bucket base and clean sand, doubling line load

The Tooling Answer: Capture and Control

For dune sands, the winning combination is a soil drilling bucket with a high-volume, tight-tolerance base and side cutting capability, paired with a pilot and guide ring to control deviation. In our experience across UAE desert projects:

  • Open-body buckets dump their load on the way up — closed-base soil buckets with an internal anti-suction valve keep the spoil in
  • A casting guide ring / pilot centring system keeps 800–1,500 mm bores within tolerance in the top 10 m, where dune drift is strongest
  • Where bore stability is critical, temporary casing (with an oscillator for deeper sections) turns a "running sand" problem into a routine operation

Practical Settings That Change the Outcome

Slow rotation on cutting, faster rotation on lifting, and never over-fill the bucket in loose sand — two-thirds fill keeps the base valve working. Crews who ignore these details typically see cycle counts jump by 30–40%.

Stock Support in the GCC

XUANWA manufactures soil drilling buckets 600–2,500 mm with sand-optimised base valves and pilots, with standard Kelly box options of 130×130 / 150×150 / 200×200 / 250×250. Buckets and wear parts are stocked at our KIZAD Abu Dhabi warehouse — same-day delivery across the UAE.
