Casing Systems Compared: Single Wall vs. Double Wall for Gulf Piles
Author:
Casing Is a System Decision
The casing string is often the highest-value tool package on a piling job after the rig itself. Choose wrong and you either overpay (double wall doing single-wall duty) or eat downtime (single wall folding in a collapsing trench). Here's the comparison for Gulf conditions.
Single Wall Casing
One steel shell, usually with a cutting shoe. Lighter and cheaper per meter.
Right for:
- Stable-to-marginally-stable formations needing temporary support (dense sand upper zones)
- Shorter casing depths where extraction loads stay modest
- Top-of-hole isolation in fill or crust zones
- Projects where casing cycles are few — light duty, low re-use counts
Watch out: Single wall deforms under hard driving, torque, and repeated oscillator grips. In deep, collapsing, or abrasive formations, wall ovality ends the string's life early.
Double Wall Casing
Two concentric walls with the annulus typically filled or stiffened — far higher torsional stiffness and crush resistance. The industry standard for casing oscillator work and full-casing projects.
Right for:
- Full-casing method through sabkha, running sand, karst zones (the default Gulf use case — see our sabkha guide)
- Deep strings with high extraction forces
- High re-use programs — metro viaduct packages where the string cycles hundreds of times
- Any job where the oscillator grips the casing under full torque
Watch out: Higher initial cost and weight — handling equipment must be sized accordingly. Overkill for shallow stable-hole duty.
Single Row vs. Double Row
This refers to the joint/lock configuration between casing segments:
- Single row connections — faster to couple, adequate for moderate torque; common on shorter strings
- Double row connections — two concentric locking rings; carries the full torque of large oscillators and deep strings without joint slippage. If your oscillator torques through the joints, double row is not optional
Gulf Selection Cheat Sheet
Project Condition | Recommended Casing |
Stable dense sand, shallow casing | Single wall, single row |
Coastal sabkha, water-bearing sand | Double wall, double row |
Karst/cavity isolation | Double wall, double row |
Metro/large-diameter, high re-use | Double wall, double row |
Top-of-hole fill isolation only | Single wall |
Life-Cycle Economics
On a 300-pile project with high string re-use, double wall's higher day-one cost amortizes to a fraction of single wall's replacement cost — the decision is really "how many cycles will this string see?" Below ~50 cycles, single wall often wins; above, double wall nearly always does.
Our casing range covers 800–3000 mm in single and double wall, single and double row configurations, matched to both oscillator models (1600/2150 mm class), stocked or built to program through our Abu Dhabi facility.
Ordering Notes
When requesting casing, have these five numbers ready:
- Pile diameter (and casing OD/ID allowance)
- Casing depth per pile
- Oscillator model (or "rotated by rig")
- Expected re-use count / project pile count
- Formation summary (collapsing? abrasive? karst?)
Contact Xuanwa Group with those five and we'll spec the string, joints, and shoes — usually within a day.
