Compatible Drilling Tools for Bauer, Liebherr & Soilmec Rigs in the Middle East

The three most common rotary drilling rig brands on Middle East piling sites — by a wide margin — are Bauer, Liebherr, and Soilmec. Walk onto any major project in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Doha, and you'll see their distinct profiles against the skyline: Bauer's BG series in their signature red-and-white, Liebherr's LB series in yellow, Soilmec's SR series in orange.

If you own or operate one of these rigs, you know the OEM tooling cost. A single OEM rock drilling bucket can run USD 15,000–30,000. For a contractor running 5+ rigs with multiple bucket sizes per rig, that's serious capital tied up in tools.

The question we hear most often from Middle East contractors is: "Will your tools fit my rig?" The answer is yes — and here's the detail behind it.

The Interface: It's All About the Kelly Bar

Every rotary drilling tool connects to the rig through a kelly box — the square receiver at the top of the tool that slides onto the kelly bar. The kelly bar transmits torque and crowd force from the rig to the tool.

Standard kelly bar sizes across all major brands:

Kelly Bar Size

Typical Rig Class

Common Rigs

130 × 130 mm

20–30 ton

Bauer BG15–BG20, Soilmec SR-30–SR-40

150 × 150 mm

30–45 ton

Bauer BG24–BG28, Liebherr LB24–LB28, Soilmec SR-45–SR-60

200 × 200 mm

45–70 ton

Bauer BG36–BG40, Liebherr LB36, Soilmec SR-70–SR-80

250 × 250 mm

70–100+ ton

Bauer BG45–BG55, Liebherr LB44, Soilmec SR-90–SR-100

We manufacture kelly boxes in all four sizes, precisely machined to match your kelly bar dimensions. When ordering, tell us your rig model and we'll machine to the correct tolerance. If you have an older rig with a worn kelly bar, we can slightly adjust the kelly box internal dimensions — too tight and it won't slide; too loose and you get rotational slop that accelerates wear on everything.

Brand-by-Brand Compatibility

Bauer BG Series (BG15 through BG55)

The most common rig in the GCC. Bauer uses a proprietary kelly bar design, but the kelly box interface is standardized by size (130/150/200/250). What matters in practice is the drive key design. Bauer kelly bars have specific keyway dimensions. Our kelly boxes are machined to match.

For Bauer rigs operating in UAE ground, we recommend:

  • BG24–BG28 (35-ton class): Max bucket φ1500mm in soil, φ1200mm in rock
  • BG36–BG40 (55–70-ton class): Max bucket φ2000mm in soil, φ1800mm in rock
  • BG45+ (80+ ton): Full range through φ2500mm

Our rock drilling buckets are used with Bauer BG36 and BG40 rigs on multiple UAE projects. The feedback is consistent: penetration rates match OEM tools, wear rates are comparable, and the price is 40-50% lower.

Liebherr LB Series (LB20 through LB44)

Liebherr rigs are popular with European-trained contractors and are common on large Dubai projects. The LB series uses a slightly different kelly bar keyway profile than Bauer, though both use the same nominal sizes (150/200/250mm). Our kelly boxes are machined to Liebherr specifications when you specify an LB rig.

Liebherr LB36 is particularly common in the UAE for 1.2m–1.8m bored piles — a size range we stock in KIZAD.

Soilmec SR Series (SR-30 through SR-100)

Soilmec rigs — Italian engineering — are widely used in the Middle East, especially the SR-70 and SR-80 models for large-diameter piles. Soilmec historically used a different drive key configuration, but current models have converged on the industry-standard kelly interface. We've supplied drilling buckets and core barrels for Soilmec rigs across the GCC.

Other Rigs: Our tools are also compatible with Casagrande (B series), IMT (AF series), Sany (SR series), XCMG (XR series), and Zoomlion (ZR series). Chinese rigs (Sany, XCMG, Zoomlion) use the same kelly bar standards and are increasingly common in the GCC due to competitive pricing.

The OEM vs. Compatible Debate

Some contractors worry: "Will using non-OEM tools void my rig warranty?" The answer, across all major manufacturers, is no — drilling tools are consumable attachments, not rig components. Your Bauer or Liebherr warranty covers the engine, hydraulics, and structural components. It does not require you to buy OEM drilling buckets any more than your car warranty requires OEM tires.

What matters is that the tool fits correctly, doesn't damage the kelly bar, and is manufactured to proper tolerances. All our tools are CNC-machined with specified kelly box clearances and undergo dimensional inspection before leaving the factory.

A Note on Rig-Specific Ground Conditions

Different rigs behave differently in the same ground. Bauer BG rigs typically have higher torque at lower RPM — good for rock drilling. Soilmec SR rigs tend to spin faster — good for soil but requires reinforced tooth holders in abrasive ground. Liebherr LB rigs are known for smooth kelly bar operation — excellent for deep piles where kelly bar bind is a concern.

We factor this into our recommendations. Tell us your rig model, and we'll suggest the optimal tooth configuration, bucket weight, and kelly box tolerance for how that specific machine delivers power to the ground.
